Các bệnh nhân ở ED có thời gian trì hoãn dưới 1 giờ trước khi dùng thuốc chống động kinh (AED) có kết quả tốt hơn so với những bệnh nhân có sự trì hoãn hơn 1 giờ (p < 0.05). Hai nguyên nhân chính gây ra SE là bệnh mạch máu não và lạm dụng rượu. 46% bệnh nhân có kết quả ngay lập tức tốt. Hoạt động động kinh trên điện não đồ (EEG), tiền sử động kinh hoặc SE, hiện diện của bệnh lý tim mạch, và lạm dụng rượu đều liên quan đến tiên lượng kém.
