Sắc tố carotenoid của spirochete vi hiếu khí tuỳ ý

Sắc tố carotenoid đã được tinh chế từ một loài spirochete đỏ, vi sinh vật ưa muối (spirochete RS1), và từ chủng Spirochaeta aurantia J1 chưa được mô tả trước đó. Cả hai spirochete này đều là vi hiếu khí tuỳ ý và sản xuất sắc tố khi phát triển trong môi trường hiếu khí. Các sắc tố chính của hai spirochete được xác định thông qua phân tích sắc ký, quang phổ hấp thụ, khử hydro, acetyl hóa và silyl hóa, cũng như phổ khối lượng. Kết luận cho rằng sắc tố chính từ spirochete RS1 là 4-keto-1',2'-dihydro-1'-hydroxytorulene. Kết luận này còn được hỗ trợ thêm bởi quang phổ hồng ngoại và dữ liệu phân tích bổ sung. Bằng chứng cho thấy rằng sắc tố chính từ S. aurantia là 1',2'-dihydro-1'-hydroxytorulene. Bằng chứng từ phân tích sắc ký và quang phổ cũng chỉ ra rằng sắc tố này cũng tồn tại như một thành phần carotenoid nhỏ trong spirochete RS1.
