Mức độ nghiêm trọng của những lo ngại phát sinh về việc chăm sóc nhà dưỡng lão do đại dịch COVID-19 yêu cầu cần xem xét khẩn cấp các tiêu chuẩn y tế cho các nhà dưỡng lão. Các bác sĩ cung cấp dịch vụ y tế cho cư dân nhà dưỡng lão cần có trình độ chính thức về y học geriatric và tâm thần học người cao tuổi. Việc điều phối trong phạm vi phức tạp của dịch vụ chăm sóc tại nhà dưỡng lão đòi hỏi một sự lãnh đạo lâm sàng được xác định rõ ràng tương xứng với các dịch vụ cần thiết. Ngành nhà dưỡng lão đã chứng kiến một số lượng tử vong không tương xứng cao trong bối cảnh đại dịch COVID-19. Sự cập nhật này đã được thực hiện bởi nhóm viết từ các hướng dẫn gốc năm 2015 và được dự định là một biện pháp tạm thời trong khi chờ đợi một cuộc rà soát chính thức hơn gồm một cuộc tổng quan hệ thống về văn liệu mới nổi và một quy trình Delphi.
