Tần suất tiêu chảy và nôn mửa ở trẻ em là rất cao. Do đó, trọng tâm của bài tổng quan hiện tại là nhận biết các khoang chất lỏng trong cơ thể khác nhau, đánh giá lâm sàng mức độ mất nước, hiểu cách duy trì sự cân bằng giữa dịch ngoại bào và dịch nội bào, tính toán độ thẩm thấu hiệu quả của máu và thảo luận về cả việc duy trì và thay thế dịch truyền tĩnh mạch.
