Aufgrund der kindlichen Physiologie ist die Atemwegssicherung bei Kindern deutlich zeitkritischer als bei Erwachsenen. Gleichzeitig sind Kindernotfälle, v. a. in der Präklinik, verhältnismäßig selten, und die Notwendigkeit, die Atemwege eines Kindes invasiv zu sichern, stellt eine Rarität dar. Dieser Beitrag verdeutlicht, dass die Oxygenierung des Kindes oberste Priorität hat und häufig ohne eine endotracheale Intubation sichergestellt werden kann. Sollten die Atemwege eines Kindes invasiv gesichert werden müssen, werden Strategien und Konzepte vorgestellt, die helfen können, die Sicherheit der Kinder zu erhöhen. Dies erscheint v. a. aufgrund der in der Regel geringen Erfahrung der präklinischen Helfer mit kindlichen Notfällen und der kindlichen Atemwegssicherung notwendig.
