Các vấn đề sức khỏe tâm thần, yếu tố khó khăn gia đình và thời thơ ấu, việc sử dụng chất kích thích và các vấn đề hành vi đều liên quan đến hành vi phạm tội trong quần thể nói chung. Tuy nhiên, chưa có nghiên cứu quy mô lớn nào với các nhóm đối chứng điều tra những yếu tố rủi ro này liên quan đến người phạm tội tự kỷ. Nghiên cứu hiện tại bao gồm 40 người phạm tội tự kỷ, 40 người không phạm tội tự kỷ, 40 người phạm tội phát triển bình thường (TD) và 39 người không phạm tội TD. Các yếu tố rủi ro về vấn đề hành vi đã phân biệt người phạm tội tự kỷ với cả hai nhóm không phạm tội (tự kỷ và TD) và các yếu tố rủi ro về sức khỏe tâm thần đã phân biệt người phạm tội tự kỷ với cả hai nhóm TD (phạm tội và không phạm tội).
