Bất bình đẳng chiều dài chân thường được chia thành hai nhóm: giải phẫu và chức năng. Phần I của bài đánh giá này phân tích dữ liệu thu thập được về bất bình đẳng chiều dài chân giải phẫu liên quan đến tính phổ biến, độ lớn, tác động và ý nghĩa lâm sàng. Phần II xem xét "chân ngắn" chức năng bao gồm các mối quan hệ giải phẫu-chức năng, và cung cấp một phác thảo cho việc ra quyết định lâm sàng.
Tìm kiếm cơ sở dữ liệu trực tuyến – Medline, CINAHL và MANTIS – và tìm kiếm thư viện trong khoảng thời gian từ 1970–2005 đã được thực hiện bằng cách sử dụng thuật ngữ "bất bình đẳng chiều dài chân".
Sử dụng dữ liệu về bất bình đẳng chiều dài chân thu được bằng các phương pháp chụp X-quang chính xác và đáng tin cậy, tính phổ biến của bất bình đẳng giải phẫu được tìm thấy là 90%, độ lớn trung bình của bất bình đẳng giải phẫu là 5.2 mm (SD 4.1). Bằng chứng cho thấy, đối với hầu hết mọi người, bất bình đẳng chiều dài chân giải phẫu không có vẻ như có ý nghĩa lâm sàng cho đến khi độ lớn đạt khoảng 20 mm (~3/4").
Bất bình đẳng chiều dài chân giải phẫu gần như phổ biến, nhưng độ lớn trung bình là nhỏ và khó có khả năng có ý nghĩa lâm sàng.
