Iraq has a long‐standing, well‐established history of veterinary education, says Kareema Al‐Salihi of the College of Veterinary Medicine at Baghdad university. However, it is currently in an ‘unenviable’ situation, with depleted resources following years of economic sanctions, and a lack of facilities and equipment as a result of financial constraints imposed by the Gulf wars. Professor Al‐Salihi argues that there is now an urgent need to revitalise the system of veterinary education in Iraq and discusses ways in which this might be achieved.
