Chế độ ăn dựa trên thịt vẫn là tiêu chuẩn, và người ăn chay, thuần chay chỉ chiếm một phần nhỏ trong dân số. Một sự chuyển đổi, tương ứng, thay đổi hành vi hướng đến chế độ ăn ít thịt chỉ có thể xảy ra bằng cách áp dụng thái độ tích cực đối với các thay đổi chế độ ăn dựa trên lý do và động lực. Mục đích chính của nghiên cứu này là áp dụng thang đo sự gắn bó với thịt (MEAS) tại Đức nhằm phân tích xem cấu trúc này có phải là một rào cản đối với chế độ ăn ít thịt tại quốc gia này hay không. Để thực hiện điều này, ảnh hưởng của sự gắn bó với thịt đối với niềm tin vào các lựa chọn protein khác nhau (thực vật, côn trùng, thịt nuôi cấy) và các công nghệ chế biến thực phẩm liên quan được phân tích. Các phát hiện cho thấy mức độ gắn bó với thịt cao đi kèm với niềm tin thấp vào protein thực vật. Điều này cũng đúng cho thịt nuôi cấy và protein từ côn trùng.
