Adaptation of P-wave moment magnitude of Turkey’s earthquakes for early warning purpose
Tóm tắt
The determination of an earthquake’s magnitude correctly is vital to understand the situation and prevent loss of lives and planning first organization for the rescue with early warning/tsunami warning at a region. In this study, we calculated moment magnitude using a P-wave portion of seismic records and indicated that it is possible to use it with all available seismic data recorded at local and regional distances rather than teleseismic for rapid estimation of the magnitude of an earthquake. Due to the smaller magnitude values declared by the national institute, this magnitude type adapted for early warning and rapid response to destructive and tsunamigenic earthquakes will be placed in and around Turkey in the future. We applied the P-wave moment magnitude technique to five earthquakes with a magnitude larger than Mw 6.5 that occurred on the Aegean Sea, Southwestern offshore, east, and southeast of Turkey. We demonstrated that this adapted magnitude determination technique can be used for all epicentres located in any region of Turkey. We applied this adapted calculation technique on broadband velocity and strong-motion acceleration records with two types of a time window that the first one is fixed time length from 10 s before P-wave onset and till 150 s after P onset and the second one uses time difference between P-wave arrival and S-wave arrival (ts-tp). Using ts-tp time difference window could be found reliable results from velocity seismograms whereas the fixed window length is more applicable for acceleration seismograms. The results both of velocity and acceleration seismograms are well agreed with global centroid moment tensor (Mw) magnitude and calculations completed within a few minutes for velocity seismograms and 10 s for acceleration seismograms. This paper presents an applicable method that can be used in real-time for early warning and rapid response for destructive earthquakes that cause tsunamis and huge loss of lives.
