Nghiên cứu này nhằm thu thập thông tin ủng hộ hoặc bác bỏ giả thuyết rằng căng thẳng cấp tính có thể kích thích rụng trứng ở phụ nữ. Việc hình thành giả thuyết này dựa trên 2 sự thật: 1) phụ nữ mãn kinh hoặc đã cắt bỏ buồng trứng và được bổ sung estrogen cho thấy sự gia tăng hormone luteinizing (LH) giống như sự rụng trứng do progesterone từ tuyến thượng thận gây ra, phản ứng với việc tiêm hormone vỏ thượng thận (ACTH) ngoại lai; và 2) phụ nữ thể hiện nhiều sóng nang trong khoảng cách giữa các lần rụng trứng, và có thể trong các giai đoạn mang thai và cho con bú. Do đó, căng thẳng cấp tính có thể gây rụng trứng ở những phụ nữ có mức estradiol trong huyết thanh thích hợp và một hoặc nhiều nang đủ lớn để phản ứng với sự gia tăng LH không phải vào giữa chu kỳ.
