Điều trị thay thế thuốc phiện đã được liên kết với việc tuân thủ tốt hơn đối với các loại thuốc kháng virus cứu sống, nhưng tác động của việc điều trị lạm dụng chất khác đối với việc tuân thủ vẫn chưa được biết đến. Trong nghiên cứu này, 215 bệnh nhân đã tham gia vào các nghiên cứu tập trung vào việc tuân thủ đã cung cấp dữ liệu tuân thủ được đo lường điện tử và một chỉ số cho biết bệnh nhân đã tham gia điều trị lạm dụng chất gần đây hay không. Việc tham gia gần đây vào điều trị lạm dụng chất có liên quan độc lập với mức độ tuân thủ cao hơn đáng kể, sau khi điều chỉnh cho việc sử dụng chất gần đây và các yếu tố khác có thể ảnh hưởng đến sự tuân thủ.
