Một dòng cDNA cystatin được cảm ứng lạnh mới (TaMDC1) đã được tách ra từ mô crown của lúa mì mùa đông được thích nghi với lạnh bằng phương pháp sàng lọc dị biệt dựa trên macroarray. Chuỗi axit amin được suy diễn bao gồm một peptide tín hiệu bài tiết N-đầu giả thuyết dài 37 axit amin và một protein trưởng thành (mTaMDC1) có khối lượng phân tử 23 kDa. mTaMDC1 có miền cystatin N-đầu rất bảo tồn và một phần mở rộng C-đầu dài chứa một vùng thứ hai, có sự tương đồng một phần với miền cystatin. mTaMDC1 tái tổ hợp đã được tinh sạch từ Escherichia coli và hoạt tính ức chế proteinase cysteine của nó đối với papain đã được phân tích.
