Tóm tắtCác gen độc lực của vi khuẩn gây bệnh, chịu trách nhiệm mã hóa cho toxin, adhesin, invasin hoặc các yếu tố độc lực khác, có thể nằm trên các yếu tố di truyền có thể truyền (transmissible genetic elements) như transposon, plasmid hoặc bacteriophage. Ngoài ra, các gen này có thể là một phần của những vùng đặc biệt trên nhiễm sắc thể vi khuẩn, được gọi là 'các đảo độc lực' (pathogenicity islands - Pais). Các đảo độc lực được tìm thấy ở cả vi khuẩn Gram âm và Gram dương.
