Chỉ số chất lượng đất là những nỗ lực phân loại điều kiện đất và so sánh những điều kiện này với việc sử dụng lịch sử của chúng. Từ thông tin này, có thể xác định những cách sử dụng đất nào là tốt hơn cho các mục tiêu dài hạn của nông nghiệp và xã hội. Với nhiều yếu tố liên quan đến sản xuất thực phẩm an toàn có lợi nhuận mà không gây suy thoái đáng kể cho môi trường và đất, một chỉ số đại diện cho góc nhìn sinh học rộng về chất lượng là phù hợp. Trong một nhóm các chỉ số sinh học, tỷ lệ giữa lượng N cây trồng hấp thụ và N khoáng hóa như được xác định bởi hô hấp vi sinh kết hợp với N khoáng hóa ròng được tìm thấy trong suốt mùa vụ là một chỉ số hữu ích về chất lượng đất. Một đánh giá về thử nghiệm Hệ thống Nông nghiệp 12 năm tại Trung tâm Nghiên cứu Rodale cho thấy rằng đất ở các lô được quản lý theo phương thức thông thường có chất lượng thấp hơn so với đất được xử lý bằng phân hữu cơ hoặc trồng các loại cây họ đậu và cây lương thực.
