Hai chú chó Shih Tzu đực đã được thiến, một chú 10 tuổi, đã xuất hiện triệu chứng ngứa ngáy toàn thân nghiêm trọng. Các mẫu da được lấy đi cho thấy sự tồn tại của Sarcoptes scabiei var. canis. Một chú chó Yorkshire terrier trong cùng hộ gia đình cũng đồng thời bị ngứa do nhiễm bệnh ghẻ. Cả hai chú chó đều được điều trị với liều 300 μg/kg ivermectin, đầu tiên là bằng đường uống và sau đó là tiêm dưới da cách nhau 14 ngày. Tuy nhiên, sau 35 ngày, vẫn phát hiện ra ve sống và tình trạng da ở cả hai chú chó đều xấu đi. Những phát hiện này cho thấy S. scabiei ở hai chú chó này kháng lại điều trị bằng ivermectin. Cảm giác ngứa ở cả hai chú chó đã biến mất nhanh chóng và hoàn toàn sau khi sử dụng fipronil tại chỗ. Đây có vẻ là báo cáo đầu tiên về trường hợp ghẻ ở chó kháng lại điều trị bằng ivermectin.
