Một câu hỏi phổ biến về chăm sóc giảm nhẹ từ những người không quen thuộc với công việc này là: “Nhưng chẳng phải nó thật u ám sao?” Quan điểm này khiến những người làm chăm sóc giảm nhẹ bị tách biệt với công chúng và phản ánh một niềm tin sâu sắc rằng những vấn đề liên quan đến cái chết và sự chết là tiêu cực. Các định nghĩa được công bố hiện không đủ để nắm bắt một cách đầy đủ ý nghĩa công việc, làm cho việc truyền đạt ý nghĩa của chăm sóc giảm nhẹ trở nên khó khăn. Nghiên cứu định tính này đã khảo sát kinh nghiệm của sáu nhân viên chăm sóc giảm nhẹ lâu dài. Chăm sóc giảm nhẹ được mô tả như “một cách sống” và trong suốt các mô tả, khái niệm “sự sống động” đã nổi lên như là ý nghĩa cốt lõi của chăm sóc giảm nhẹ. Trong bối cảnh kinh tế hiện tại, nơi có sự cạnh tranh về nguồn kinh phí chăm sóc sức khỏe, việc đạt được sự đồng thuận rộng rãi hơn về ý nghĩa của chăm sóc giảm nhẹ là rất quan trọng nếu muốn đưa ra các quyết định được thông báo về phân bổ nguồn lực.
