An Empirical Method for Estimating the Degree of Crystallinity of Native Cellulose Using the X-Ray Diffractometer
Tập 29 Số 10 - Trang 786-794 - 1959
Leon Segal, Joseph J. Creely, Andrew Martin, Carl M. Conrad
An empirical method for determining the crystallinity of native cellulose was studied with an x-ray diffractometer using the focusing and transmission techniques. The influence of fluctuations in the primary radiation and in the counting and recording processes have been determined. The intensity of the 002 interference and the amor phous scatter at 2θ = 18° was measured. The percent cryst...... hiện toàn bộ
Structures of Novel Antimicrobial Agents for Textiles - A Review
Tập 80 Số 16 - Trang 1721-1737 - 2010
Barbara Simončić, Brigita Tomšič
In this article we review some of the contemporary antimicrobial agents used in textiles, including quaternary ammonium compounds, N-halamines, chitosan, polybiguanides, triclosan, nanoparticles of noble metals and metal oxides, and bioactive plant-based products. According to their mechanism of antimicrobial activity, toxicity, durability and ecological acceptability, these agents can be...... hiện toàn bộ
Chemical Composition and Mechanical Properties of Basalt and Glass Fibers: A Comparison
Tập 79 Số 7 - Trang 645-651 - 2009
T. Deák, Tibor Czigány
The geometrical and mechanical properties and chemical composition of different basalt and glass fibers have been investigated. Tensile tests were performed on short basalt fiber made by melt blowing, glass fiber and three different types of continuous basalt fibers made by spinneret method. The chemical composition was evaluated by plasma atomic emission spectroscopy. The geometrical and...... hiện toàn bộ
An Analysis of the System Effects in Woven Fabrics under Ballistic Impact
Tập 62 Số 9 - Trang 495-509 - 1992
Philip Cunniff
Following a brief review of prior work on fabric-based armor systems, the system effects that occur during the ballistic impact of woven fabric body armor materials are discussed from a conceptual framework developed to relate single yarn impact mechanics to fabric impact mechanics. The consequence of assembling yarns into single-ply fabric structures is discussed from this perspective. A...... hiện toàn bộ
Applications of Infrared Absorption Spectroscopy to Investigations of Cotton and Modified Cottons
Tập 28 Số 5 - Trang 382-392 - 1958
Robert T. O’Connor, Elsie F. DuPré, Donald Mitcham
The KBr technique to obtain spectra of cotton cellulose has been applied satisfactorily to an investigation of physical and crystalline modifications and to changes resulting from oxidation. Several experiments to illustrate applications are described. The potential applications to investigations suggested in the literature are reviewed. It has been shown that infrared a...... hiện toàn bộ
Stress-Strain Relationships in Yarns Subjected to Rapid Impact Loading
Tập 28 Số 4 - Trang 288-302 - 1958
Jack C. Smith, Frank L. McCrackin, Herbert F. Schiefer
The behavior of an infinitely long flexible filament after transverse impact is treated theoretically. The filament is assumed to have a tension-strain curve which is always concave downwards and to have no short time creep or stress relaxation effects. Under most conditions the impact initiates a variable strain that propagates down the filament between an "elastic wave" front and a "pla...... hiện toàn bộ
Effect of Environmental Relative Humidity and Damage on the Tensile Properties of Flax and Nettle Fibers
Tập 68 Số 9 - Trang 623-629 - 1998
G. C DAVIES, David Bruce
The effects of environmental conditions and mechanical damage on the tensile stiffness and strength of two natural fibers, flax and nettle, are investigated. Flax and nettle both contain cellulosic fiber bundles in the outer layer of the plant, each bundle comprising many individual cells bonded together. Novel experimental equipment is designed and constructed to measure, under varying e...... hiện toàn bộ
Effect of Low Temperature Plasma Treatment on the Scouring and Dyeing of Natural Fabrics
Tập 74 Số 9 - Trang 751-756 - 2004
Danmei Sun, George K. Stylios
The contact angles, wicking properties, scourability, and dyeability of wool and cotton fabrics are affected by low-temperature plasma treatments. After treatment, wool and cotton fabric specimens show increased hydrophilicity and improved scouring and dyeing processing by nearly 50%.
Changes in the Structure of Wet-Spun Acrylic Fibers During Processing
Tập 41 Số 3 - Trang 196-203 - 1971
James P. Bell, J. H. Dumbleton
The structural changes that occur during processing of a wet-spun 93% polyacrylonitrile -7% polyvinyl acetate co polymer are discussed. Stress-strain, x-ray diffraction, shrinkage, and electron microscopy data are explained in terms of a model in which the molecules are in an irregular helical conformation in the relaxed state and can extend during de formation. The molecules are arranged...... hiện toàn bộ
Investigating the Plasma Modification of Natural Fiber Fabrics-The Effect on Fabric Surface and Mechanical Properties
Tập 75 Số 9 - Trang 639-644 - 2005
Danmei Sun, George K. Stylios
Following previous work [ Textile Research Journal, 74,751-756 (2004)], the mechanical and surface properties and handle of wool and cotton fabrics were measured using the KES-FB system after different stages of treatment. This investigation shows that the mechanical properties of wool and cotton changed remarkably after oxygen plasma treatment. There were no significantly observed differ...... hiện toàn bộ
