The tail that wags: differences in effective right tail coverage and estimates of wealth inequalityJournal of Economic Inequality - Tập 17 - Trang 443-459 - 2019
Arthur B. Kennickell
This paper focuses on the sensitivity of survey-based estimates of wealth
inequality to the quality of the measurement of the upper tail of the
distribution. Using data from the 2013 Survey of Consumer Finances (SCF), it
develops a series of illustrative examples to highlight some of the problems in
making comparisons of wealth inequality measures when there are specific defects
in the measurement... hiện toàn bộ
Extending multidimensional poverty identification: from additive weights to minimal bundlesJournal of Economic Inequality - Tập 20 - Trang 421-438 - 2021
Sam Jones
In the popular class of multidimensional poverty measures introduced by Alkire
and Foster (2011), a threshold switching function is used to identify who is
multidimensionally poor. This paper shows that the weights and cut-off employed
in this procedure are generally not unique and that such functions implicitly
assume all groups of deprivation indicators of some fixed size are perfect
substitutes... hiện toàn bộ
Sustainable Development Goals and the Study of Economic InequalityJournal of Economic Inequality - Tập 19 - Trang 3-11 - 2020
Ravi Kanbur
This paper is an introduction to a special issue of the Journal of Economic
Inequality which contains a selection of articles published in the Journal which
bring economic perspectives and methods to bear on dimensions of inequality
highlighted in the Sustainable Development Goals. The papers show that the study
of economic inequality has much to contribute to the global policy discourse
which is ... hiện toàn bộ
More on the measurement of inequalityJournal of Economic Inequality - Tập 6 - Trang 277-283 - 2008
A. B. Atkinson
The article, written in 1973, examines what comparisons of income distributions
can be made when Lorenz curves cross, employing the concept of third-order
stochastic dominance.
Identification-robust methods for comparing inequality with an application to regional disparitiesJournal of Economic Inequality - - Trang 1-20 - 2024
Jean-Marie Dufour, Emmanuel Flachaire, Lynda Khalaf, Abdallah Zalghout
We propose Fieller-type methods for inference on generalized entropy inequality
indices in the context of the two-sample problem which covers testing the
statistical significance of the difference in indices, and the construction of a
confidence set for this difference. In addition to irregularities arising from
thick distributional tails, standard inference procedures are prone to
identification ... hiện toàn bộ
The Use of Distributional National Accounts in Better Capturing the Top Tail of the DistributionJournal of Economic Inequality - Tập 20 - Trang 245-254 - 2022
Jorrit Zwijnenburg
This article explains how the compilation of distributional results in line with
national accounts’ totals may assist in overcoming some of the challenges faced
by micro data statistics in measuring inequality, including capturing the top
tail. As national accounts rely on a harmonised system of concepts and
definitions in which multiple data sources are brought together in order to
arrive at comp... hiện toàn bộ
Sibling correlation in risk attitudes: evidence from Burkina FasoJournal of Economic Inequality - Tập 19 - Trang 45-72 - 2020
Mohammad H. Sepahvand, Roujman Shahbazian
This study uses sibling correlation to provide novel descriptive evidence of
parental and household characteristics on three different risk domains collected
in a nationally representative survey from Burkina Faso. The sibling
correlations are between 0.51 and 0.83. The correlations are higher in the
general risk domain compared to risk taking in financial matters and traffic.
Moreover, the siblin... hiện toàn bộ
