Risks and benefits of zolpidem use in Taiwan: a narrative review
BioMedicine - Tập 6 - Trang 1-3 - 2016
Shih-Wei Laia
Zolpidem is a non-benzodiazepine hypnotic drug commonly used for the treatment of insomnia. However, to date, extensive evidence has shown that zolpidem use is a factor associated with certain clinical conditions, not that it treats these conditions. The aim of this review is to summarize current published articles on the risks and benefits of zolpidem use.
Cross-species identification of in silico microsatellite biomarkers for genetic disease
BioMedicine - Tập 4 - Trang 1-4 - 2014
Hao-Teng Chang, Yu-Yang Lo, Jhen-Li Huang, Wei-Yong Lin, Tun-Wen Pai
Microsatellites appear widely in genomes of diverse species. Variants of repeat number of microsatellites often correlate with risks of genetic disorder or severity of diseases. Using cross-species comparison, the proposed system comprehensively verifies microsatellites of specific genes related to 16 genetic disorders. Genomic information retrieved from 14 frequently used model organisms in biome...... hiện toàn bộ
Needling therapy for myofascial pain: recommended technique with multiple rapid needle insertion
BioMedicine - Tập 4 Số 2 - Trang 1-8 - 2014
Chou, Li-Wei, Hsieh, Yueh-Ling, Kuan, Ta-Shen, Hong, Chang-Zern
Myofascial trigger point (MTrP) is a major cause of muscle pain, characterized with a hyperirritable spot due to accumulation of sensitized nociceptors in skeletal muscle fibers. Many needling therapy techniques for MTrP inactivation exist. Based on prior human and animal studies, multiple insertions can almost completely eliminate the MTrP pain forthwith. It is an attempt to stimulate many sensit...... hiện toàn bộ

Sambucus williamsii induced embryonic stem cells differentiated into neurons
BioMedicine - Tập 5 - Trang 1-5 - 2015
Shih-Ping Liu, Chien-Yu Hsu, Ru-Huei Fu, Yu-Chuen Huang, Shih-Yin Chen, Shinn-Zong Lin, Woei-Cherng Shyu
The pluripotent stem cells, including embryonic stem cells (ESCs), are capable of self-renewal and differentiation into any cell type, thus making them the focus of many clinical application studies. However, the efficiency of ESCs differentiated into neurons needs to improve. In this study, we tried to increase efficiently to a neural fate in the presence of various transitional Chinese medicines...... hiện toàn bộ
Personalized medicine in Type 2 Diabetes
BioMedicine - Tập 4 - Trang 1-8 - 2014
Wen-Ling Liao, Fuu-Jen Tsai
Type 2 diabetes (T2D) is a global public health concern, its prevalence in Asia, especially Taiwan, rising every year. The risk of developing T2D and diabetes complications is not only controlled by environmental but also by genetic factors. Genetic association studies have shown polymorphisms at specific loci may help identify individuals at greatest risk and response to oral antidiabetic drugs. ...... hiện toàn bộ
Antibacterial effects and action modes of asiatic acid
BioMedicine - Tập 5 - Trang 1-8 - 2015
Wen-hu Liu, Te-Chung Liu, Mei-chin Mong
In this study, the antibacterial effects and action modes of asiatic acid against the foodborne bacterial pathogens Escherichia coli O157:H7, Salmonella Typhimurium DT104, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Listeria monocytogenes, Staphylococcus aureus, Enterococcus faecalis, and Bacillus cereus were examined. Minimal inhibitory concentrations (MICs) of asiatic acid against these bacteria were in the range o...... hiện toàn bộ

Solitary renal metastasis of esophageal squamous cell carcinoma mimicking primary renal neoplasm – A case report and literature review
BioMedicine - Tập 6 - Trang 1-5 - 2016
Kai-Po Chang, Chi-Ping Huang, Han Chang
Solitary renal metastasis of esophageal cancer is rare clinically, with only 14 cases being reported in the literature. The authors here report a case of a 53-year-old man with a metachronous hypopharyngeal and esophageal squamous cell carcinoma who developed a solitary renal metastasis after complete chemoradiotherapy for esophageal cancer, and subsequently received a left nephrectomy. The metast...... hiện toàn bộ
