The constantly increasing variety of networking technologies used in automobiles today results in complex and cost-intensive E/E architectures. For this reason the innovation alliance for automobile electronics E|ENOVA initiated the research project “SEIS — Safety in Embedded IP-based Systems”, with the aim of creating a consistent security solution for internet protocol based communication inside the vehicle and for the vehicle's communication with the environment. The project partners now report for the first time on the success of the security initiative, which was started one year ago.

Above all, the functionality of presentday safety systems is based upon already existing sensor information. Consider for instance the electronic vehicle-dynamics control systems or the electronically controlled tuneable damping. Using the data from a number of different sensors (radar, lidar, infrared, and cameras) Delphi Corporation is implementing a variety of helpful assistance systems such as lane departure warning, pedestrian identification, or the adaptive cruise control. In future, sensor amalgamation will lead to even better advantage being taken of the existing potential.
