Automatic evaluation methods of a speech translation system's capability
IEEE Workshop on Automatic Speech Recognition and Understanding, 2001. ASRU '01. - - Trang 359-362
F. Sugaya, K. Yasuda, T. Takezawa, S. Yamamoto
The main goal of the paper is to propose automatic schemes for the translation paired comparison method, which was proposed by the authors to evaluate precisely a speech translation system's capability. In the method, the outputs of the speech translation system are subjectively compared with the results of native Japanese taking the Test of English for International Communication (TOEIC), which i...... hiện toàn bộ

Beyond the Informedia digital video library: video and audio analysis for remembering conversations
IEEE Workshop on Automatic Speech Recognition and Understanding, 2001. ASRU '01. - - Trang 296-300
A.G. Hauptmann, Wei-Hao Lin
The Informedia Project digital video library pioneered the automatic analysis of television broadcast news and its retrieval on demand. Building on that system, we have developed a wearable, personalized Informedia system, which listens to and transcribes the wearer's part of a conversation, recognizes the face of the current dialog partner and remembers his/her voice. The next time the system see...... hiện toàn bộ

Estimated rank pruning and Java-based speech recognition
IEEE Workshop on Automatic Speech Recognition and Understanding, 2001. ASRU '01. - - Trang 401-404
N. Jevtic, A. Klautau, A. Orlitsky
Most speech recognition systems search through large finite state machines to find the most likely path, or hypothesis. Efficient search in these large spaces requires pruning of some hypotheses. Popular pruning techniques include probability pruning which keeps only hypotheses whose probability falls within a prescribed factor from the most likely one, and rank pruning which keeps only a prescrib...... hiện toàn bộ

Automatic selection of transcribed training material
IEEE Workshop on Automatic Speech Recognition and Understanding, 2001. ASRU '01. - - Trang 417-420
T.M. Kamm, G.G.L. Meyer
Conventional wisdom says that incorporating more training data is the surest way to reduce the error rate of a speech recognition system. This, in turn, guarantees that speech recognition systems are expensive to train, because of the high cost of annotating training data. We propose an iterative training algorithm that seeks to improve the error rate of a speech recognizer without incurring addit...... hiện toàn bộ

CORBA-based speech-to-speech translation system
IEEE Workshop on Automatic Speech Recognition and Understanding, 2001. ASRU '01. - - Trang 355-358
R. Gruhn, K. Takashima, A. Nishino, S. Nakamura
We describe the new implementation of a speech-to-speech translation system at ATR Spoken Language Translation Research Laboratories (SLT). We use the architecture standard CORBA (Common Object Request Broker Architecture) to interface between a speech recognizer, translation system and TTS engine. Various input types are supported, including close-talking microphone and telephony hardware.

Generating phonetic cognates to handle named entities in English-Chinese cross-language spoken document retrieval
IEEE Workshop on Automatic Speech Recognition and Understanding, 2001. ASRU '01. - - Trang 311-314
H.M. Meng, Wai-Kit Lo, Berlin Chen, K. Tang
We have developed a technique for automatic transliteration of named entities for English-Chinese cross-language spoken document retrieval (CL-SDR). Our retrieval system integrates machine translation, speech recognition and information retrieval technologies. An English news story forms a textual query that is automatically translated into Chinese words, which are mapped into Mandarin syllables b...... hiện toàn bộ

European Language Resources Association history and recent developments
IEEE Workshop on Automatic Speech Recognition and Understanding, 2001. ASRU '01. - - Trang 465-466
K. Choukri
This paper aims at briefly describing the rationale behind the foundation of the European Language Resources Association (ELRA) in 1995 and its activities since then. We would like to focus on the issues involved in making language resources available to different sectors of the language engineering community. ELRA is presented as a conduit for the distribution of speech, written and terminology d...... hiện toàn bộ

Piecewise-linear transformation-based HMM adaptation for noisy speech
IEEE Workshop on Automatic Speech Recognition and Understanding, 2001. ASRU '01. - - Trang 159-162
Zhipeng Zhang, S. Furui
This paper proposes a new method using a piecewise-linear transformation for adapting phone HMM to noisy speech. Various noises are clustered according to their acoustic properties and signal-to-noise ratios (SNR), and a noisy speech HMM corresponding to each clustered noise is made. Based on the likelihood maximization criterion, the HMM which best matches the input speech is selected and further...... hiện toàn bộ

Very large vocabulary proper name recognition for directory assistance
IEEE Workshop on Automatic Speech Recognition and Understanding, 2001. ASRU '01. - - Trang 222-225
F. Bechet, R. de Mori, G. Subsol
This paper deals with the difficult task of recognition of a large vocabulary of proper names in a directory assistance application. After a presentation of the related work, it introduces a methodology for rescoring the N-best hypotheses generated by a first step recognition. First experiments give encouraging results and several topics for future research are presented.
