Các bệnh tim mạch vẫn là một trong những nguyên nhân hàng đầu gây tử vong trên toàn thế giới, liên quan đến nhiều yếu tố nguy cơ, bao gồm thay đổi lối sống và sự gia tăng tỷ lệ tiểu đường. Nghiên cứu hiện tại nhằm khám phá tác dụng ngăn ngừa của kẽm đối với những thay đổi bệnh lý ở động mạch chủ. Mô hình chuột tiểu đường thể loại 1 OVE26 đã được sử dụng với/không có bổ sung kẽm trong 3 tháng. Để xác định sự khác biệt giới tính, cả chuột đực và cái đều được nghiên cứu song song qua các xét nghiệm mô bệnh học và miễn dịch mô học, kết hợp với thử nghiệm PCR thời gian thực. Tiểu đường đã gây ra sự gia tăng đáng kể trong tình trạng tổn thương oxy hóa, viêm, và tái cấu trúc (tăng xơ hóa và độ dày thành mạch) mà không có sự khác biệt đáng kể giữa hai giới tính. Điều trị bằng kẽm cho những chú chuột tiểu đường này trong ba tháng đã hoàn toàn ngăn chặn những thay đổi bệnh lý ở động mạch chủ nêu trên, và cũng đã làm tăng đáng kể sự biểu hiện và chức năng của yếu tố hạt nhân (như 2)-deriv-2 (Nrf2), một yếu tố điều hòa chính của cơ chế chống oxy hóa, và sự biểu hiện của metallothionein (MT), một chất chống oxy hóa mạnh. Có sự khác biệt giới tính đối với tác dụng bảo vệ của kẽm trước những thay đổi bệnh lý do tiểu đường, cũng như mức độ biểu hiện được tăng cường của Nrf2 và MT ở động mạch chủ. Những kết quả này gợi ý rằng việc bổ sung kẽm cung cấp một sự bảo vệ đáng kể chống lại những thay đổi bệnh lý do tiểu đường gây ra ở động mạch chủ mà không có sự khác biệt giới tính trong mô hình chuột tiểu đường thể loại 1.
