Các lý thuyết duy lý về bạo lực chính trị tuyên bố chứ không chứng minh những gì thúc đẩy việc tham gia chiến tranh. Bài viết này cố gắng xem xét những giới hạn của việc tái cấu trúc những động lực này bằng cách phân tích tư liệu phỏng vấn được thu thập từ các cựu chiến binh Serbia. Sử dụng “thuyết định dạng cơ sở” như một phương pháp nghiên cứu, nghiên cứu này đã tiết lộ rằng việc xác định các động lực phải xem xét các bối cảnh xã hội và lịch sử, diễn ra như những thế giới hiện hữu và những cách nhìn nhận thế giới. Tuy nhiên, những điểm quyết định thực sự thì rất khó để xác định. Do đó, bài viết đề xuất một sự tập trung mạnh hơn vào các “người mang” (Trägerschichten) cho việc nghiên cứu các động lực xung đột.
