Các chiết xuất nước từ phụ phẩm của nhà máy rượu đã thể hiện khả năng kích thích phòng thủ thực vật đáng kể. Các thí nghiệm đã được tiến hành trên ba chiết xuất bã nho chứa các lượng polyphenol và anthocyanin khác nhau. Việc thấm các chiết xuất bã nho đỏ, bã nho trắng và bã hạt nho vào lá thuốc lá đã gây ra tổn thương giống như phản ứng nhạy cảm quá mức với cái chết tế bào được chứng minh bằng nhuộm Evans Blue. Các vùng thấm và các khu vực xung quanh thể hiện sự tích lũy các hợp chất phát quang tự nhiên dưới ánh sáng UV. Việc thấm ba chiết xuất phụ phẩm nhà máy rượu vào lá đã kích thích sự biểu hiện gen phòng thủ. Các gen mục tiêu kháng khuẩn PR1, β-1,3-glucanase PR2 và chitinase PR3 đã được tăng cường tại chỗ ở cây thuốc lá sau khi xử lý với chiết xuất bã nho. Các bản sao của osmotin PR5 cũng đã tích lũy trong lá thuốc lá được xử lý bằng chiết xuất bã nho đỏ. Tổng thể, các chiết xuất từ phụ phẩm nhà máy rượu đã kích thích một loạt phản ứng phòng thủ thực vật, khiến cho bã nho trở thành nguồn tiềm năng cho các hợp chất có giá trị cao.
