Đường đi của sự thay đổi trong lòng tự trọng và điều tiết cảm xúc của cha mẹ từ khi mang thai đến 4 năm sau sinh

Chúng ta biết khá nhiều về tác động ngay lập tức khi trở thành cha mẹ, nhưng ít hơn về tác động lâu dài hơn khi cha mẹ thích ứng với các thay đổi phát triển nhanh chóng đặc trưng cho giai đoạn tuổi thơ sớm. Nghiên cứu theo chiều dọc này khám phá cách lòng tự trọng và điều tiết cảm xúc của cha mẹ phát triển trong suốt thai kỳ, thời kỳ sơ sinh, giai đoạn chập chững và tuổi mầm non. Chúng tôi đã sử dụng chín đợt dữ liệu từ 550 cha mẹ Hà Lan để xem xét sự ổn định và thay đổi trong lòng tự trọng và điều tiết cảm xúc từ khi mang thai cho đến 4 năm sau sinh, đối với cả lần mang thai đầu tiên và các lần mang thai sau. Lòng tự trọng và điều tiết cảm xúc cho thấy cùng một quỹ đạo thay đổi, với sự giảm sút trong thai kỳ và thời kỳ sơ sinh, và sự gia tăng trong giai đoạn chập chững và tuổi mầm non. Cha có mức độ lòng tự trọng và điều tiết cảm xúc cao hơn so với mẹ, nhưng sự thay đổi liên quan đến độ tuổi của trẻ là tương tự cho cả cha và mẹ. Các bậc cha mẹ lần đầu và lần thứ hai, thứ ba hoặc thứ tư không khác nhau về mức độ lòng tự trọng và điều tiết cảm xúc, cũng như về sự thay đổi liên quan đến độ tuổi. Trong suốt 4 năm sau sinh, cha mẹ có phần gia tăng nhẹ về lòng tự trọng và điều tiết cảm xúc. Kết quả cho thấy rằng, đối với cha mẹ trung bình, sự ra đời của một đứa trẻ gây ra một sự sai lệch tạm thời khỏi xu hướng tổng thể hướng tới lòng tự trọng và điều tiết cảm xúc cao hơn. Vì cả hai đặc điểm này đều dự đoán cho sự hạnh phúc của cha mẹ, nuôi dạy con cái tích cực và sự phát triển của trẻ, nghiên cứu trong tương lai cần điều tra xem một can thiệp có nên và có thể làm nhẹ đi sự chuyển tiếp đến vai trò cha mẹ, từ đó ngăn ngừa sự suy giảm này hay không.
