Hồ sơ đầu tiên về Ganoderma có thể được truy nguyên từ Dược điển do các nhà khoa học Trung Quốc viết vào thế kỷ thứ nhất trước Công nguyên. Một số loài Ganoderma được biết đến với tên gọi là nấm "thối trắng", gây ra hiện tượng hiển thị xenluloza trắng trên gỗ bằng cách phân hủy thành phần lignin. Ganoderma boninense là tác nhân chính gây bệnh thối gốc (BSR), là một vấn đề dai dẳng trong việc trồng cây cọ dầu (Elaeis guineensis, Jacq.) cần được kiểm soát. Cây cọ dầu, là ký chủ chính của mầm bệnh này, là một loại cây trồng quan trọng về kinh tế được trồng ở Đông Nam Á, châu Phi và châu Mỹ. Do những ảnh hưởng tiêu cực của Ganoderma đối với cây, đặc biệt là cây cọ dầu, bài tổng quan này tập trung vào các cơ chế nhiễm trùng của Ganoderma và các biện pháp kiểm soát, tầm quan trọng của lignin và silicon (Si) đối với sự phòng thủ của cây. Bài tổng quan này cũng khám phá các phương pháp khác nhau để kiểm soát Ganoderma và các kỹ thuật sản xuất cây cọ dầu ít nhạy cảm hơn. Việc thao tác di truyền cây cọ dầu để nâng cao khả năng kháng lại Ganoderma cũng được thảo luận.
