Trong bài báo này, chúng tôi áp dụng phân tích nội dung suy diễn đối với 100 công bố có ảnh hưởng nhất trong lĩnh vực doanh nhân xã hội (SE) nhằm xác định các giả định chuẩn mực trong học thuật SE. Sử dụng tám trường phái tư tưởng hiện đại trong triết học chính trị làm khuôn mẫu cho phân tích, chúng tôi xác định các triết lý nền tảng của tài liệu SE và những hệ quả quan trọng của các quan điểm chuẩn mực (thường bị bỏ qua) của họ, như: các khái niệm mơ hồ, lý do biện minh và chỉ trích, và những mâu thuẫn chuẩn mực. Nghiên cứu của chúng tôi đóng góp cho tài liệu SE bằng cách đề xuất rằng triết học chính trị có thể giúp xác định đâu là 'xã hội' trong SE. Chúng tôi chỉ ra một số căng thẳng chuẩn mực vốn có của lĩnh vực này có thể làm giảm tác động của nó, và đề xuất các cách mà sự nhận thức về chuẩn mực có thể giúp thiết lập một nền tảng để đánh giá và chứng minh tác động xã hội, kinh tế và văn hóa của SE.
