Sự hoài nghi về lợi ích và sự cần thiết của việc phát hiện sớm bệnh suy giảm trí tuệ là không chính đáng. Không chỉ bệnh nhân, mà còn đặc biệt là người chăm sóc cũng rất được hưởng lợi từ chẩn đoán kịp thời. Bác sĩ gia đình không cần phải sử dụng đến sàng lọc hay chẩn đoán sớm, nhưng nên cảnh giác trước những tín hiệu nghi ngờ đầu tiên. Ngoài ba giai đoạn trong quy trình chẩn đoán – bao gồm sự lựa chọn, chẩn đoán phân biệt và chẩn đoán chăm sóc – thì chẩn đoán tình hình của người chăm sóc cũng là một giai đoạn quan trọng thứ tư. Liên quan đến điều đó, hiện tại bác sĩ gia đình thiếu rõ ràng về hướng dẫn để tiếp cận tình huống chăm sóc xung quanh một bệnh nhân mắc bệnh suy giảm trí tuệ một cách chấp nhận được. Thiếu những hướng dẫn này, họ cảm thấy không phải là người cung cấp hỗ trợ phù hợp nhất cho người chăm sóc, mặc dù người chăm sóc xem họ như vậy. Trong mọi trường hợp, điều quan trọng là phải tư vấn cho người chăm sóc một cách riêng biệt, tức là không có sự hiện diện của bệnh nhân mắc suy giảm trí tuệ.
