Tóm tắt
Trong hầu hết thế kỷ 20, dịch tễ học của các bệnh rickettsioses do ve mang sang có thể được tóm tắt là sự xuất hiện của một loại rickettsia gây bệnh duy nhất trên mỗi châu lục. Một yếu tố của mô hình này đề xuất rằng nhiều rickettsia khác được định hình và chưa được định hình mà được tách ra từ ve không gây bệnh cho con người. Trong bối cảnh này, người ta cho rằng tương đối ít rickettsia do ve mang sang gây bệnh ở người. Khái niệm này đã được sửa đổi một cách đáng kể từ năm 1984 đến 2005 bởi việc xác định ít nhất 11 loài hoặc phân loài rickettsia bổ sung có khả năng gây ra các bệnh rickettsioses do ve mang sang trên toàn thế giới. Trong số các tác nhân này, bảy tác nhân ban đầu được tách ra từ ve, thường là nhiều năm hoặc hàng thập kỷ trước khi có sự liên kết rõ ràng với bệnh ở người được thiết lập.
