Các loại thuốc hiện tại để điều trị bệnh kala-azar (leishmaniasis nội tạng) là không đủ. Không có hợp chất mới nào đang trong quy trình phát triển. Do lợi nhuận kinh tế từ việc phát triển một loại thuốc mới cho các bệnh bị bỏ quên như leishmaniasis là rất thấp, nên chuyển đổi liệu pháp đại diện cho chiến lược duy nhất thực tế. Điều này đề cập đến việc phát hiện "sử dụng thuốc thay thế" khác với ý định ban đầu của loại thuốc. Amphotericin B, paromomycin, miltefosine và nhiều loại thuốc khác là những ví dụ thành công về "thuốc mới từ thuốc cũ". Bài viết này xem xét việc khám phá, phát triển và tình trạng hiện tại của các loại thuốc này và kết luận rằng tiềm năng của phương pháp này (chuyển đổi liệu pháp) có thể được sử dụng trong việc phát triển các loại thuốc chống leishmania mới trong tương lai.
