Du lịch mùa đông là nguồn thu nhập chính và là động lực phát triển của nhiều khu vực miền núi. Tuy nhiên, trong những năm gần đây, ngành này đã được xác định là cực kỳ dễ bị tổn thương trước sự biến đổi khí hậu trong tương lai. Mặc dù Pyrenees có khu vực trượt tuyết lớn nhất châu Âu sau Alps, nhưng có rất ít đánh giá chi tiết về nguy cơ dễ bị tổn thương do biến đổi khí hậu tại các khu nghỉ dưỡng trượt tuyết trong khu vực này. Bài báo này phân tích sự dễ bị tổn thương của các khu nghỉ dưỡng trượt tuyết ở Pyrenees đối với những thay đổi dự kiến trong lớp tuyết dưới các kịch bản khí hậu trong tương lai khác nhau. Ngoài ra, nghiên cứu còn phân tích tính bền vững của các hệ thống tạo tuyết nhằm bù đắp sự biến động khí hậu của lớp tuyết tự nhiên. Trung bình, nghiên cứu dự đoán độ dài mùa trượt tuyết sẽ ngắn lại, đặc biệt là tại các khu nghỉ dưỡng trượt tuyết ở độ cao thấp trong kịch bản biến đổi khí hậu vừa phải và đối với tất cả các khu nghỉ dưỡng trượt tuyết trong kịch bản biến đổi khí hậu nghiêm trọng hơn. Tuy nhiên, một sự khác biệt đáng kể theo vùng đã được xác định cho các tác động được dự đoán ở những khoảng cách địa lý rất ngắn trong khu vực nghiên cứu. Hơn nữa, bài báo này chỉ ra rằng việc tạo tuyết không thể hoàn toàn giải quyết vấn đề cho tất cả các khu nghỉ dưỡng trượt tuyết ở Pyrenees, vì biện pháp này chỉ có thể hoạt động như một chiến lược thích ứng mạnh mẽ trong khu vực nếu sự biến đổi khí hậu được giới hạn ở mức +2 °C cho việc tạo tuyết.
