Áp xe răng cấp tính thường bị đánh giá thấp về mức độ đau đớn và nguy hiểm mà nó gây ra. Nguy cơ xảy ra những hậu quả nghiêm trọng có thể do sự lan rộng của áp xe răng vẫn còn mãi cho đến hôm nay với nhiều trường hợp nhập viện do nhiễm trùng răng miệng. Áp xe răng cấp tính thường là đa vi khuẩn, bao gồm các vi khuẩn kỵ khí tùy tiện, như các liên cầu nhóm viridans và nhóm Streptococcus anginosus, với chủ yếu là các vi khuẩn kỵ khí bắt buộc, chẳng hạn như cầu khuẩn kỵ khí, các loài PrevotellaFusobacterium. Việc sử dụng các kỹ thuật không cấy ghép đã mở rộng cái nhìn của chúng ta về sự đa dạng vi sinh vật của các tác nhân gây bệnh, xác định các sinh vật như các loài Treponema và các que Gram dương kỵ khí như Bulleidia extructa, Cryptobacterium curtumMogibacterium timidum.
