Mặc dù các hậu quả bất lợi của nghèo đói đối với trẻ em đã được ghi nhận rộng rãi, nhưng còn rất ít hiểu biết về các cơ chế thông qua đó những ảnh hưởng của nghèo đói gây thiệt thòi cho trẻ nhỏ. Trong phân tích này, chúng tôi điều tra nhiều cơ chế thông qua đó nghèo đói ảnh hưởng tới sự phát triển trí tuệ của trẻ. Sử dụng dữ liệu từ NLSY và các mô hình phương trình cấu trúc, chúng tôi đã xây dựng năm yếu tố tiềm ẩn (kích thích nhận thức, phong cách nuôi dạy con cái, môi trường vật lý, sức khỏe kém của trẻ lúc sinh ra và sức khỏe kém khi còn nhỏ) và cho phép các yếu tố này, cùng với sự chăm sóc trẻ em, trung gian cho các ảnh hưởng của nghèo đói và các biến bên ngoài khác. Chúng tôi thu được hai kết quả chính. Thứ nhất, ảnh hưởng của nghèo đói gia đình đối với sự phát triển trí tuệ của trẻ em được trung gian hoàn toàn bởi các cơ chế can thiệp được đo bằng các yếu tố tiềm ẩn của chúng tôi. Thứ hai, phân tích của chúng tôi chỉ ra rằng kích thích nhận thức tại nhà, và (ở mức độ thấp hơn) phong cách nuôi dạy con cái, môi trường vật lý của ngôi nhà và sức khỏe kém của trẻ lúc sinh ra, là những yếu tố trung gian bị ảnh hưởng bởi sự thiếu thốn thu nhập và ảnh hưởng đến sự phát triển trí tuệ của trẻ em.
