Hiệu suất trong các bài toán từ vựng bị ảnh hưởng bởi các yếu tố ngôn ngữ và số học, cũng như sự tương tác của chúng. Để nghiên cứu những yếu tố và sự tương tác này, chúng tôi đã thao tác độc lập các yếu tố ngôn ngữ và số học trong một thiết kế trong đó có các tham số phức tạp (a) trong lĩnh vực số học: mượn/cầm (không mượn/cầm so với mượn/cầm), phép toán (cộng so với trừ), (b) trong lĩnh vực ngôn ngữ: danh từ hóa (dạng danh từ so với dạng động từ), và (c) kết nối hai lĩnh vực: tính nhất quán từ vựng (đối tượng ngôn ngữ nhất quán tại chỗ so với không nhất quán với phép toán số học). Thời gian phản hồi của 25 sinh viên khi giải 320 bài toán từ vựng một bước đã được đo lường. Cả bốn yếu tố đều cho thấy tác động chính đến thời gian phản hồi, và sự tương tác giữa các yếu tố ngôn ngữ và số học đã ảnh hưởng đến thời gian phản hồi. Những sự tương tác này được quan sát khi các yếu tố ngôn ngữ và số học được liên kết về mặt khái niệm. Kết quả của chúng tôi nhấn mạnh rằng không chỉ tính phức tạp về ngôn ngữ và số học của một đối tượng góp phần vào độ khó của một bài toán từ vựng, mà các yếu tố ngôn ngữ và số học còn tương tác với nhau. Chúng tôi thảo luận về những hệ quả lý thuyết cho lĩnh vực số và lĩnh vực ngôn ngữ cũng như tác động tiềm tàng của những đặc điểm chung của lĩnh vực, chẳng hạn như giới hạn bộ nhớ làm việc như một lý do tiềm ẩn cho các sự tương tác quan sát được giữa các thuộc tính số học và ngôn ngữ.
