Sự xuất hiện của xã hội dân sự có tổ chức và các tổ chức phi chính phủ (NGOs) như là những biểu hiện tổ chức của các phong trào xã hội rộng lớn hơn đã làm thay đổi đáng kể bối cảnh chính trị - kinh tế toàn cầu. Sự mở rộng toàn cầu ngày càng tăng của các NGOs đã thách thức các nghiên cứu về kinh doanh quốc tế (IB) đã được thiết lập, đồng thời làm nổi bật các cơ hội để mở rộng và điều chỉnh các mô hình hiện có trong lĩnh vực này.
