Mô mỡ sản xuất các yếu tố, bao gồm adipokine, cytokine và chemokine, khi được giải phóng sẽ tác động một cách hệ thống lên nhiều mô, từ đó ảnh hưởng đến sinh lý của chúng. Adipokine cũng ảnh hưởng đến trục dưới đồi - tuyến yên - sinh dục (HPG) ở mức trung ương, tại mức độ dưới đồi - tuyến yên, và ở mức ngoại vi tác động trực tiếp lên các tuyến sinh dục.
