The dependence of the cosmic-ray shower age on shower size for vertical sizes in the range 6·105

Measurements have been made of the electron lateral-distribution age parameter for cosmic-ray showers with sea-level sizes from ∼105 to 6·106 particles. It is found that, in the size range from ∼6·105 particles to ∼6·106 particles, the shower age decreases rapidly with size corresponding to a rapid change in the equivalent development depth with shower size. Measurements of the age distribution of the showers with sizes below ∼5·105 show a selection bias towards young showers.
