Mặc dù các thảm họa tự nhiên gây rối loạn cho rừng nhiệt đới ở châu Á có thể do hoạt động núi lửa và động đất, nhưng các thảm họa do khí hậu gây ra là phổ biến nhất. Những thảm họa này diễn ra thường xuyên và đa dạng nhất ở các vĩ độ nhiệt đới cao do chế độ gió mùa khô và ẩm chỉ diễn ra một lần mỗi năm. Các nghiên cứu so sánh cho thấy tính chu kỳ của các thảm họa có thể ảnh hưởng đến cảnh quan rừng, cấu trúc và sự phong phú loài, nhưng nghiên cứu dài hạn trên các ô mẫu cho thấy rằng nhiều yếu tố khác cũng có ảnh hưởng đáng kể ở từng địa phương.
