Các nghiên cứu về mối liên hệ giữa hai bệnh lý miệng chính: sâu răng và viêm nướu thông qua các mô hình hồi quy đa biến vẫn còn hạn chế. Mục tiêu của nghiên cứu cắt ngang dựa trên quần thể này là xác minh liệu sâu răng và viêm nướu có cùng xuất hiện trong một mẫu đại diện cho dân số Hàn Quốc hay không. Tổng cộng có 23.405 đối tượng đại diện cho 36,2 triệu người trưởng thành (KNHANES) đã được khảo sát. Phân tích hồi quy đơn biến và đa biến với 7 mô hình khác nhau đã được áp dụng, kiểm soát các yếu tố như tuổi tác, giới tính, tình trạng hút thuốc, tần suất đánh răng, sử dụng bàn chải giữa kẽ răng và chỉ nha khoa, trình độ học vấn, thu nhập, điều trị bệnh nướu và trám răng trong năm trước, chỉ số khối cơ thể (BMI), mức Vitamin D trong huyết thanh, tình trạng nghiện rượu, tình trạng tiểu đường, căng thẳng và lượng carbohydrates trong chế độ ăn uống. Trong mô hình đã điều chỉnh hoàn toàn, những người tham gia có viêm nướu có trung bình 0.82 (Khoảng tin cậy 95%: 0.41–1.23) và 0.36 (Khoảng tin cậy 95%: 0.22–0.50) bề mặt và răng sâu không điều trị nhiều hơn so với những người tham gia không có viêm nướu, với tỷ lệ Odds (OR) có ít nhất một bề mặt sâu không điều trị là 1.96 (Khoảng tin cậy 95%: 1.66–2.32). Tuy nhiên, kinh nghiệm sâu răng tích lũy (điểm DF) và viêm nướu không có mối liên hệ với nhau. Trong quần thể lớn đại diện cho toàn quốc này, viêm nướu và sâu răng không được điều trị thường đồng xuất hiện. Tuy nhiên, khi xem xét kinh nghiệm sâu răng tích lũy (điểm DF), hai bệnh này dường như không có mối quan hệ. Trong bối cảnh có khả năng đồng xuất hiện của chúng, các bác sĩ lâm sàng nên thực hiện các chiến lược chẩn đoán, phòng ngừa và điều trị tích hợp cho cả hai bệnh.
