Trong bối cảnh tỷ lệ tự tử gia tăng và bằng chứng về sức khỏe tâm thần kém trong các nhóm nghề y tế, chẳng hạn như bác sĩ thú y, bác sĩ, dược sĩ và nha sĩ, đã có sự chú ý ngày càng tăng đối với những sinh viên hướng đến sự nghiệp trong các lĩnh vực này. Thường thì người ta đề xuất rằng một tỷ lệ cao trong số những sinh viên này có thể sở hữu những đặc điểm tính cách khiến họ dễ bị tổn thương về sức khỏe tâm thần. Tổng cộng có 1.744 sinh viên đang học tập trong các lĩnh vực y học thú y, y học, nha khoa, dược và luật tại Vương quốc Anh đã hoàn thành một bảng hỏi trực tuyến, thu thập dữ liệu về năm đặc điểm tính cách lớn (NEO-FFI), chủ nghĩa hoàn hảo (Thang đo Chủ nghĩa hoàn hảo Đa chiều Frost), sức khỏe tinh thần (Thang đo Sức khỏe Tinh thần Warwick-Edinburgh), căng thẳng tâm lý (Bảng hỏi Sức khỏe Tổng quát-12), trầm cảm (Thang đo Trầm cảm Beck-II) và suy nghĩ cùng hành vi tự sát. Sinh viên ngành thú y, y học và nha khoa có điểm số thỏa hiệp cao hơn đáng kể so với sinh viên ngành luật, trong khi sinh viên ngành thú y có điểm số chủ nghĩa hoàn hảo thấp nhất trong năm nhóm nghiên cứu. Mức độ lo âu cao và tính kỷ luật thấp là những yếu tố dự đoán về sức khỏe tâm thần kém gia tăng trong từng nhóm sinh viên. Nghiên cứu nhấn mạnh rằng quan điểm hiện tại cho rằng sinh viên chuyên nghiệp sở hữu những đặc điểm tính cách không thích hợp ảnh hưởng tiêu cực đến sức khỏe tâm thần của họ có thể là một cách nhìn sai lầm.
