Hội chứng hậu thuyên tắc (PTS) là biến chứng phổ biến nhất của thuyên tắc tĩnh mạch sâu (DVT) nhưng vẫn chưa nhận được nhiều sự quan tâm từ các bác sĩ lâm sàng và nhà nghiên cứu. Về lâm sàng, PTS được đặc trưng bởi cảm giác đau mãn tính, sưng, nặng nề và các dấu hiệu khác ở chi bị ảnh hưởng. Trong những trường hợp nặng, có thể phát triển loét tĩnh mạch. PTS gây gánh nặng và chi phí cao cho bệnh nhân và xã hội do tỉ lệ mắc cao, mức độ nghiêm trọng và tính chất mãn tính của nó. Ngăn ngừa DVT bằng cách sử dụng thuốc phòng ngừa thuyên tắc hiệu quả cho những bệnh nhân và tình huống có nguy cơ cao và giảm thiểu nguy cơ tái phát DVT cùng bên có thể làm giảm tần suất xảy ra của PTS. Việc mặc tất nén hàng ngày sau khi bị DVT dường như làm giảm tần suất và mức độ nghiêm trọng của PTS, tuy nhiên vẫn còn những câu hỏi về việc sử dụng và hiệu quả của chúng. Các nghiên cứu trong tương lai nên tập trung vào việc xác định những bệnh nhân có nguy cơ cao mắc PTS, đánh giá vai trò của liệu pháp tiêu sợi huyết trong việc ngăn ngừa PTS và đánh giá việc sử dụng tối ưu tất nén trong việc ngăn ngừa và điều trị PTS. Thêm vào đó, cần tìm kiếm và đánh giá các liệu pháp mới để điều trị PTS.
