Khả năng nhanh chóng và hiệu quả trong việc trích xuất hình thức chữ viết trực quan là rất quan trọng khi sử dụng việc đọc như một công cụ cho việc học. Chúng tôi mô tả nghiên cứu fMRI dài hạn đầu tiên nhằm ghi nhận các thay đổi cá nhân về độ nhạy của vỏ não đối với chữ viết khi việc đọc phát triển. Chúng tôi đã thực hiện bốn phép đo chức năng não và kỹ năng đọc hàng năm ở một nhóm trẻ em đa dạng, ban đầu từ 7 đến 12 tuổi. Kết quả cho thấy có sự gia tăng độ nhạy của trẻ em đối với sự hiện diện của từ ngữ ở sulcus occipito-temporal bên trái phía sau (LOTS) theo độ tuổi, gần với vị trí giải phẫu của vùng hình thức chữ viết trực quan. Hơn nữa, tỷ lệ gia tăng độ nhạy từ LOTS đặc biệt liên quan đến tỷ lệ cải thiện trong hiệu suất từ ngữ nhìn, một chỉ số về tốc độ đọc từ ngữ biểu hiện nhanh. Các vùng vỏ não khác, bao gồm V1, vỏ não đỉnh phía sau và đồng nghiệp bên phải của LOTS, không cho thấy những thay đổi phát triển như vậy.
