Hồ Maggiore (Bắc Ý) đã được công nhận là một môi trường thủy sinh bị ô nhiễm nặng nề bởi các chất ô nhiễm hữu cơ bền vững, chủ yếu là các hợp chất chứa clo hữu cơ, nhưng đến nay thông tin hạn chế về một loại ô nhiễm khác phổ biến và nguy hiểm, chẳng hạn như các hydrocacbon thơm đa vòng (PAHs). Mục tiêu của nghiên cứu này là điều tra xu hướng theo mùa và theo thời gian của 18 PAHs tích lũy trong các mẫu vật Dreissena polymorpha bản địa trong suốt chương trình giám sát sinh học kéo dài 5 năm, cũng như xác định các nguồn phát thải PAH có thể có bằng cách sử dụng tỷ lệ chẩn đoán đồng phân. Ngao vằn đã được thu mẫu cả ở giai đoạn sinh sản trước (tháng 5) và sau sinh sản (tháng 9) trong giai đoạn từ 2008 đến 2012 tại tám trạm lấy mẫu trải dài dọc theo bờ hồ. Nồng độ PAH được đo thông qua khí sắc ký ghép khối phổ. Một sự ô nhiễm PAH đáng kể theo xu hướng tạm thời gia tăng đã được ghi nhận trong các loài hai mảnh vỏ từ tất cả các trạm lấy mẫu, với benzo(α)antracen là hợp chất chiếm ưu thế. Một sự gia tăng chung về mức độ PAH đã được phát hiện trong các cuộc khảo sát sau sinh sản, cho thấy một sự tính mùa rõ rệt của sự ô nhiễm này có thể do sự gia tăng hoạt động du lịch trong các tháng mùa xuân - mùa hè.
