Huisarts Wet 2009;52(11):536-41. Inleiding Tai Chi Chuan is een veelbelovende interventie om vallen bij ouderen te voorkomen. Methode We randomiseerden 269 zelfstandig wonende ouderen van 75 jaar en ouder met een verhoogd valrisico in twee groepen. De eerste groep kreeg standaardzorg aangeboden. De tweede groep kreeg daarnaast gedurende 13 weken, 2 keer in de week, 1 uur Tai Chi Chuan-groepstraining. Beide groepen ontvingen een informatiebrochure over de mogelijkheden om het valrisico in en om het huis te verminderen. Bij aanvang en na 3, 6 en 12 maanden werden follow-upmetingen verricht. Resultaten De 269 ouderen werden verdeeld over de Tai Chi Chuan-oefengroep (138 ouderen) en de controlegroep (131 ouderen). Na twaalf maanden follow-up was het valrisico in de Tai Chi Chuan-oefengroep niet significant verschillend van het valrisico in de controlegroep (hazardratio 1,16; 95%-BI 0,84-1,60). Evenmin vonden we verschillen tussen de groepen op de secundaire uitkomstmaten, te weten balans, valangst, lichamelijke activiteit, zelfredzaamheid, bloeddruk en hartslagfrequentie in rust. Conclusie Onze onderzoeksbevindingen suggereren dat Tai Chi Chuan mogelijk niet effectief is om het valrisico te verminderen bij zelfstandig wonende ouderen met een verhoogd valrisico.
