Tỷ lệ thất nghiệp đã là một vấn đề kinh tế, chính trị và xã hội lớn ở nhiều quốc gia trong hai thập kỷ qua, cũng như trong những năm giữa hai cuộc chiến. Một trong những điểm mạnh của nghiên cứu xã hội và tâm lý về thất nghiệp trong những năm 1930 là các phát hiện đã được công bố từ nhiều quốc gia trên khắp châu Âu lục địa cũng như từ các quốc gia nói tiếng Anh, đặc biệt là Vương quốc Anh và Hoa Kỳ. Bằng chứng cho điều này được thể hiện trong các bài tổng hợp tài liệu được ghi lại một cách tỉ mỉ bởi Eisenberg và Lazarsfeld (1938) và Garraty (1978).
