Excepting Co-Sm, which may be considered a mature technology, recent permanent magnet research has proceeded along four lines, (a) improvement of the properties of Fe-Nd-B by alloying additions and processing, (b) the exploration of other alloy systems that feature the tetragonal compound of the Fe14Nd2B type, such as Fe-Pr-B and the carbides, (c) the systematic study of new magnetic compounds, such as those based on the Mn12Th structure, and (d) the characterization, sometimes elusive, of phases that are present in the known systems and contribute to coercivity.
