Study on the Vertical Profile of Refractive Index in the Troposphere

The vertical profiles of atmospheric pressure and optical refractive index have been theoretically analyzed. The refractive index can be determined at any altitude above the sea level in the troposphere. The ranging error has been analyzed and ranging accuracy could be improved when the average refractive index along the ray path is used.
