Nghiên cứu này trình bày cái nhìn tổng quát về gian lận từ góc độ xã hội học, sử dụng lý thuyết xã hội học về sự lệch lạc làm cánh cửa phân tích để khám phá khái niệm gian lận trong số sinh viên đại học tại một trường đại học công ở Ghana. Nghiên cứu này đã sử dụng phỏng vấn có cấu trúc bán định để thu thập dữ liệu từ sinh viên đại học. Nghiên cứu đã chỉ ra rằng cả sinh viên và nhà trường đều có những cách hiểu của riêng họ về hành vi nào được coi là chấp nhận được trong các kỳ thi. Nếu sinh viên hiểu và gán nhãn một số hình thức giao tiếp trong kỳ thi là "làm việc nhóm, hỗ trợ và là nguồn động viên", điều này có thể giải thích cho sự tồn tại của các hành động này trong số sinh viên, bất chấp nhãn lệch lạc được gán cho nó và các biện pháp mà nhà trường đã áp dụng để giải quyết điều này. Dựa trên sự hiểu biết này, chúng tôi tranh luận rằng sinh viên có thể sẽ tuân theo các quy tắc do trường đại học đề ra về các kỳ thi nếu họ được làm rõ rằng việc tuân thủ các quy tắc này có liên quan và sẽ mang lại lợi ích cho cả sự nghiệp học tập và sự phát triển tương lai của họ. Để làm được điều đó, trường đại học phải làm nhiều hơn là chỉ cung cấp cuốn sách hướng dẫn sinh viên xác định các quy định về thi cử.
