Các thay đổi cấu trúc trong hydrogels polyvinyl alcohol-borax có pha tạp sắt carbonyl đã được nghiên cứu, phụ thuộc vào nồng độ chất pha tạp và chất liên kết chéo, bằng phương pháp Tán xạ Neutron Góc Nhỏ. Đối với các hydrogels không pha tạp và ferrogels với nồng độ hạt từ 40 mg/ml, các giá trị độ dài tương quan cho thấy sự giảm đều đặn khi nồng độ borax tăng lên. Trong ferrogels với nồng độ hạt từ tính tương đối thấp (20 mg/ml), việc gia tăng nồng độ borax dẫn đến sự tăng ban đầu trong độ dài tương quan, tiếp theo là sự giảm. Sự khác biệt trong hành vi được giải thích dựa trên sự biến đổi phụ thuộc vào nồng độ của quá trình lắng và kết tủa của các hạt từ, điều này ảnh hưởng đến hiệu ứng che chắn do các ion Na+ tự do trong dung môi gây ra.
